Privacy Policy

Last updated: May 16, 2026

1. Introduction

Discover Tamil ("we," "our," or "us") is operated by SECURIGHT PTY LTD (Australia). We are committed to protecting your privacy. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and website.

We handle personal information in accordance with the Australian Privacy Principles (APPs) under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth), the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the UK GDPR for users in those jurisdictions, and the India Digital Personal Data Protection Act 2023 (DPDP Act) for users in India.

Discover Tamil is released worldwide except the United States and Canada. We do not track you across other companies’ apps or websites, and we do not use your data for advertising.

2. Age Requirement

You must be at least 17 years old to create an account or use Discover Tamil.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone under 17. If we learn that we have collected personal information from someone under 17, we will delete that information promptly. If you believe a person under 17 has provided us with personal information, please contact us at vanakkam@discovertamil.com.

3. Information We Collect

3.1 Information You Provide

  • Email address and basic profile information from your Apple ID or Google account when you sign in
  • Learning progress and preferences (XP, hearts, streaks, completed lessons)
  • Writing-practice submissions you save for your own review
  • Email address if you join the launch waitlist or contact us for support

3.2 Automatically Collected Information

  • Device information (type, operating system, app version)
  • Usage data (features used, time spent, lesson completion events)
  • Analytics data via Google Analytics (website) and in-app analytics events — linked to your account when signed in, and disabled if you opt out
  • Crash and error diagnostics only if enabled in a submitted app version and disclosed in the App Store privacy labels

4. How We Use Your Information

  • To provide and improve our Tamil language and culture learning service
  • To personalize your learning experience and remember your progress
  • To send you product updates and launch notifications (you may unsubscribe at any time)
  • To respond to your inquiries and support requests
  • To analyze usage patterns and improve the app
  • To detect and prevent abuse, fraud, or violations of our Terms

5. Data Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your data:

  • SSL/TLS encryption for all data transmission (TLS 1.2+)
  • Secure cloud infrastructure via Supabase with Row Level Security on every database table
  • HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) enabled site-wide
  • Regular security audits and dependency updates
  • Data stored in SOC 2 compliant data centers

6. AI in Our Content Production

Discover Tamil uses generative AI as part of how we produce and translate the content we publish in the app — including lesson text, story narration, cultural explanations, infographics, vocabulary examples, quiz questions, and pre-recorded audio.

AI is used by us, in production, before content reaches you. The app does not run a live AI chatbot, and we do not send your messages, voice recordings, or photos to a third-party AI provider while you use the app.

Publisher responsibility. All AI-assisted content is published under our editorial responsibility. We review content for cultural accuracy and Tamil-language correctness before publishing, but as with any large body of content, errors can occur. Please see the “AI-assisted content” section of our Terms of Service for the purposes for which this content is and is not intended.

Labeling. Where practical, AI-assisted content is labeled in the app so that you can distinguish it from human-curated content. This is intended to support the transparency expectations of Article 50 of the EU AI Act.

If we ever introduce a live AI feature (for example, an AI chat tutor, voice recognition that calls a cloud AI service, or camera-based object recognition), we will update this Privacy Policy, label the feature clearly in the app, and notify you in-app before turning it on for your account.

7. Data Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We may share data with:

  • Supabase — Database hosting, authentication, and file storage (SOC 2 compliant)
  • Google Cloud — AI features via the Gemini API (text generation, translation, pronunciation scoring), Speech-to-Text API (voice recognition for speaking practice), and Text-to-Speech API (audio pronunciation). Text and audio you submit to AI features is processed by Google Cloud services on the paid tier.
  • Apple — Sign in with Apple identity verification
  • Google — Sign in with Google identity verification
  • Cloudflare — Web hosting, content delivery, and DDoS protection
  • Google Analytics — Website usage analytics (with your consent; opt-out available in-app)
  • Brevo — Transactional and waitlist email delivery
  • Legal authorities when required by law, valid legal process, or to protect rights and safety

8. Your Rights

You have the right to:

  • Access — View the personal data we hold about you
  • Correction — Update inaccurate data via your profile settings
  • Deletion — Request account deletion in the app where available, or by emailing us. We process verified deletion requests within 30 days.
  • Data export — Request a copy of your learning data from privacy settings where available, or by emailing us
  • Opt-out of analytics — Disable usage analytics at any time (Settings → Privacy & Data → Analytics)
  • Opt-out of marketing — Unsubscribe from any email via the unsubscribe link in each email

9. GDPR & International Users

If you are located in the European Economic Area (EEA), United Kingdom, or other jurisdictions with data protection laws, you have the following additional rights:

  • Data portability — Request your data in a portable format from privacy settings where available, or by emailing us
  • Restriction of processing — Disable analytics tracking via Settings → Privacy & Data → Analytics. This stops all usage data collection immediately.
  • Right to object — Contact us at vanakkam@discovertamil.com to object to any processing
  • Right to complain — Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

Our legal basis for processing is: (a) your consent given at sign-up, (b) performance of our educational service, and (c) our legitimate interest in improving the app (which you can opt out of via the Analytics toggle).

International data transfers: Account data is hosted on Supabase. Where personal data of EU, UK, or Swiss residents is transferred outside the EEA, UK, or Switzerland (including to processors such as Google Cloud and Cloudflare in the United States), those transfers are made under the Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs) approved by the European Commission, and the UK International Data Transfer Addendum where applicable.

Personal data breach notification: If we become aware of a personal data breach that is likely to result in a risk to your rights and freedoms, we will notify the relevant supervisory authority within 72 hours where required by law (for example under GDPR Article 33), and we will notify affected users without undue delay where required by law.

10. Data Retention

We keep your account data for as long as your account is active. When a verified deletion request is processed, personal data is removed from active systems within 30 days, subject to limited records we must retain for legal, security, or dispute purposes. Backups are purged on a rolling cycle. Anonymous, aggregated analytics may be retained indefinitely as it cannot be linked back to you.

11. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes via email or in-app notification, and we will update the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Continued use of the Service after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Policy.
