Aavani Avittam (Upakarma) is when Brahmin men change their sacred thread (Poonool) and renew their commitment to Vedic studies. It marks the beginning of the Vedic academic year.

Significance

Signifies the renewal of the sacred thread and recommitment to Vedic learning. It is a day of atonement for past year's sins and fresh beginning for scriptural studies.

How to celebrate

Change sacred thread after ritual bath. Perform Sandhyavandanam. Recite Gayatri Japam the next day. Prepare special food without onion and garlic.
