Pongal is a four-day harvest festival celebrated in Tamil Nadu, marking the end of the winter solstice and the beginning of Uttarayana. It is THE most important festival for Tamil people worldwide, celebrating the Sun God and agricultural abundance.
Significance
Pongal celebrates the Sun God (Surya), thanking nature for the harvest. The word "Pongal" means "to boil over" - symbolizing abundance and prosperity. It marks Tamil cultural identity and agricultural heritage.
