Āṟṟuvār āṟṟal paciyāṟṟal
Appaciyai māṟṟuvār āṟṟaliṉ nōy
English translation
The strength of those who endure is enduring hunger; relieving that hunger through begging is more painful than the power to endure.
Listen
Explanation
True strength lies in bearing hunger with dignity. Begging to relieve hunger is worse than the hunger itself because it destroys self-respect.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a parched riverbed lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. A relentless drought withered their crops, and soon, hunger gnawed at their bellies. Arun, a proud man, tightened his belt and toiled each day, hoping for rain. He shared his meager meals with his family, rationing every grain of rice. Bala, however, after days of hardship, lost heart. He went to the wealthy merchant in the village, begging for food. The merchant, though generous, looked down upon Bala with pity. Bala received a handful of rice, but the shame of begging poisoned his joy. When the rains finally came, both farmers rejoiced. Arun's crops, though thin, revived. Bala's field lay barren, his spirit broken. Arun shared his harvest with his neighbor, but Bala found the taste of Arun's generosity bittersweet, a constant reminder of his earlier despair.
