Oṉṟā ulakattu uyarnta pukaḻallār
Paṇṭoṉṟum īvā rirappu
English translation
In this unified world, those who lack lofty fame will never give anything when begged from.
Listen
Explanation
People without reputation or honor are unlikely to be generous. Begging from them is futile because they have nothing to give, neither materially nor spiritually.

Story behind this kural
The village of Eldoria was known for two things: its fertile fields and its miserly merchant, Silas. His granaries overflowed, yet he turned away every beggar, claiming poverty. Across the valley lived Elara, a woman renowned for her kindness. Though her own stores were modest, she always shared what she had. One harsh winter, a famine swept Eldoria. Villagers, desperate, sought aid. They first went to Silas, pleading for grain. He scoffed, pointing to his locked doors. Disheartened, they turned to Elara. Though her stores were low, she welcomed them. She shared her seeds, her meager harvest, and even her own meager meals. Silas watched, shaking his head. When spring arrived, Elara's fields bloomed with life, nourishing the grateful villagers. Silas’s granaries still stood full, but his name was whispered with scorn. The villagers found prosperity in Elara's fields, and her reputation grew. Silas remained wealthy but utterly alone.
