நல்லார் நமரா கயவரோ டென்றும்
அல்லற்பட் டொழுகிற் பவர்
Nallār namarā kayavarō ṭeṉṟum
Allaṟpaṭ ṭoḻukiṟ pavar
English translation
The good will never befriend the base, who always live in suffering and misery.

Good people avoid the base because base people constantly dwell in suffering and cause suffering to others. Association with them brings only misery.

Story behind this kural
In a quiet village nestled beside a shimmering lake, lived two farmers, Arun and Varun. Arun was known for his kindness and generosity. His fields always yielded a bountiful harvest, and he shared his surplus with those in need. Varun, however, was a miser. He hoarded his wealth, treating his neighbors with suspicion and greed. One year, a terrible drought struck the village. Arun, despite the hardship, continued to offer help, sharing his dwindling resources. Varun, seeing his fortune threatened, grew more selfish. He refused to lend even a handful of grain, and his bitterness poisoned his heart. As the drought worsened, Arun's spirit remained unbroken, his community rallied around him. Varun, isolated by his own actions, grew increasingly anxious and desperate. He lost sleep, his health failing. He finally understood that his wealth brought him no comfort, only fear and misery. His neighbors, even those he could have helped, avoided him.
