Explanation

Envy is personified as a sinner (பாவி). This sinner first destroys wealth (திரு) and then leads the person to hellfire. Envy is both a worldly and spiritual destroyer.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a whispering river lived two potters, Arun and Bala. Arun crafted sturdy, beautiful pots, and the villagers eagerly bought them. Bala, watching Arun's success, felt a knot of discontent tighten in his chest. He began to whisper to the villagers, subtly suggesting Arun's pots were overpriced and cracked easily. Soon, the villagers, swayed by Bala's words, began to avoid Arun's stall. His pots gathered dust, and his livelihood dwindled. Meanwhile, Bala’s pots remained unsold. He found no joy in Arun’s misfortune, only a hollow emptiness. His own hands, once skilled, seemed clumsy and his pots cracked more than before. The river, once a source of peace, now seemed to mock his envy. The village, once a place of shared joy, now felt like a lonely, burning pit.
