மறத்தல் வெகுளியை யார்மாட்டும்
தீய பிறத்தல் அதனான் வரும்
Maṟattal vekuḷiyai yārmāṭṭum
Tīya piṟattal ataṉāṉ varum
English translation
Forget anger towards everyone; for from anger arise all evil consequences.

Explanation
This kural advises complete abandonment of anger against all people, without exception. Anger is the seed from which all kinds of suffering and evil grow. By eliminating anger, we prevent countless problems.

குறள் 303 விளக்கம்: யாரிடத்தும் கோபத்தை மறந்திடுங்கள். கோபத்தினால் தீய விளைவுகள் உண்டாகும். "வெகுளாமை" அதிகாரத்தின்படி, கோபம் எல்லாத் தீமைகளுக்கும் மூலம். கோபத்தை விட்டால் துன்பம் இல்லை.

Story behind this kural
In a peaceful village nestled beside a whispering river lived two potters, Arun and Bala. Arun was known for his steady hand and beautiful creations, while Bala, though talented, was quick to anger. One day, a wealthy merchant, displeased with a pot Bala made, loudly scorned his work. Bala, his face reddening, cursed the merchant and smashed the pot to pieces. The merchant, furious, stormed off, vowing revenge. Later, the merchant, using his influence, spread rumors about Bala’s character, leading villagers to avoid his shop. Bala, consumed by bitterness, retaliated with harsh words, deepening the rift. His business dwindled, and he became isolated. Meanwhile, Arun, witnessing the scene, calmly offered the merchant a new, even finer pot, accepting the previous criticism with grace. The merchant, impressed by Arun’s composure, recommended his work far and wide. Arun’s business flourished, and the villagers admired his peaceful nature. He continued to create beautiful pottery, unburdened by resentment.
