Industriousness appears when fortune favors; laziness appears when fate turns against wealth.

Listen

Explanation

Thiruvalluvar opens this chapter by acknowledging fate's influence. ஆகூழ் (favorable fate) manifests as அசைவின்மை (diligence), while போகூழ் (adverse fate) brings மடி (laziness). Yet this observation doesn't negate free will.

Story behind this kural

In a sun-drenched village nestled by a fertile river, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun toiled diligently, irrigating his fields, even when the sun beat down mercilessly. The rains were plentiful that year, and his crops flourished, yielding a bountiful harvest. His granaries overflowed, and his neighbors marveled at his industry. Bala, however, was often found napping under the shade of a banyan tree. He’d mutter about the heat and the stubborn soil. When the rains came, he was slow to repair his irrigation channels. His crops withered, and his family struggled. He blamed the heavens for his misfortune. The next year, a drought struck the land. Arun, using the wealth he had wisely saved, dug a well and managed to salvage a small harvest. Bala, however, having spent his previous earnings on frivolous pleasures, had nothing to fall back on. He was left with empty hands, further weighed down by despair.
