Tāmiṉ puṟuvatu ulakiṉ puṟakkaṇṭu

Kāmuṟuvar kaṟṟaṟin tār

English translation

The learned love learning, seeing that their own joy brings joy to the world.

Listen

Explanation

Scholars காமுறுவர் (desire/love) learning because they understand a beautiful truth: their own இன்பம் (joy) in knowledge creates உலகின் இன்பம் (joy for the world). Personal enlightenment serves universal good.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a whispering river lived Elara, a young woman known for her kindness. She possessed a thirst for knowledge, spending hours deciphering ancient scrolls. Others saw her locked away, and whispered that she was wasting her time. One day, a terrible sickness swept through the village, leaving many weak and feverish. The village elder was helpless, the local healers confused. Elara, remembering a passage she had read, knew of a healing herb. Using her knowledge, she gathered the herb and prepared a remedy. The villagers, skeptical at first, watched as the sick began to recover. Soon, the entire village was healed. Elara continued to read and learn, always seeking new knowledge. The villagers, once critical, now sought her guidance, understanding that her personal pursuit of learning brought joy and well-being to them all. They found that her happiness in learning had become their happiness too.
