Epporuḷ yāryārvāyk kēṭpiṉum

Apporuḷ meypporuḷ kāṇpa taṟivu

English translation

Wisdom is discerning the truth of any matter, no matter from whom one hears it.

Listen

Explanation

A wise person does not judge truth by who speaks it but evaluates every statement on its own merit. They can extract truth even from unexpected sources. This is critical thinking.

Story behind this kural

The village elder, known for his wisdom, was challenged by a boastful merchant. "Old man," the merchant sneered, "your knowledge is outdated! I’ve traveled the world. I know the true worth of things." He then loudly declared that the finest gem, the 'Eye of the Serpent,' was worthless, a mere trinket. The villagers murmured, respecting the elder's judgment. He listened patiently, then asked a simple farmer, "What do you know of gems?" The farmer, shy but honest, admitted he knew little but had once found a stone that caught the sun's light beautifully. It brought joy to his family. The elder smiled. He examined the merchant’s gem, then the farmer’s stone. He declared the merchant's gem, though flawless, lacked the warmth of the farmer's simple stone. He praised the farmer's observation of beauty and value. The merchant scoffed, but some villagers quietly agreed. The elder knew truth was found, not just in reputation, but in the heart.
