நிலத்தியல்பால் நீர்திரிந் தற்றாகும்
மாந்தர்க்கு இனத்தியல்பது ஆகும் அறிவு
Nilattiyalpāl nīrtirin taṟṟākum
Māntarkku iṉattiyalpatu ākum aṟivu
English translation
Just as water changes according to the nature of the soil, a person's wisdom changes according to the nature of their companions.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two young farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun spent his days with jovial, yet lazy companions, always celebrating and rarely working. His fields, mirroring his friendships, were overgrown with weeds, yielding little. Bala, however, chose the company of diligent, thoughtful villagers. They spent their days discussing the best ways to nurture the land, sharing knowledge and helping each other. Bala’s fields flourished, heavy with grain. One day, Arun visited Bala, marveling at the abundance. “How do you grow such a bountiful harvest while mine withers?” he asked. Bala smiled, leading Arun to the river. “Observe,” he said. He pointed to where the river flowed through rich soil, nourishing life, and then to a stagnant pool choked with mud.
