Explanation

The five senses (sight, hearing, taste, smell, touch) are called gateways through which desires enter. God is described as having completely mastered these. Those who follow His path of pure, truthful conduct will thrive.

Story behind this kural

In a serene village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived a farmer named Arul. He possessed a keen eye for the finest soil, a sensitive ear for the rustling leaves, and a nose that could detect the sweetest fruit. Yet, Arul was often swayed by fleeting pleasures. One day, tempted by a vendor's vibrant trinkets, he neglected his crops. Another, lured by the promise of sweet wine, he missed the vital rains. Across the village lived Selvi, a woman known for her unwavering resolve. Though she too possessed the same senses, she remained unmoved by distractions. She carefully observed her fields, listened to the advice of elders, and focused her energy on tending her land. When a terrible drought struck, Arul’s fields withered, and his harvest failed. But Selvi’s crops flourished, providing sustenance for her and many others.
