Muyaṟci tiruviṉai ākkum

Muyaṟṟiṉmai iṉmai pukutti viṭum

English translation

Effort brings the goddess of fortune; lack of effort ushers in poverty.

Listen

Explanation

Simple and direct: முயற்சி (effort) brings திரு (Lakshmi/fortune/wealth). The opposite, முயற்றின்மை (lack of effort), brings இன்மை (poverty/lack). The verb ஆக்கும் (creates/brings) vs புகுத்திவிடும் (pushes into) shows the contrast - effort actively creates wealth, while laziness passively allows poverty to enter.

Story behind this kural

In a sun-drenched village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun rose with the dawn, his hands already in the earth. He tilled his fields with diligence, planting seeds and tending to his crops with unwavering care. The soil yielded bountiful harvests, and his storehouses overflowed with grain. Bala, however, preferred the shade. He slept until the sun was high, grumbling about the heat. His fields lay fallow, weeds choking the few neglected plants. When the rains came, his meager crop was swept away, and his family went hungry. One day, Arun saw Bala struggling to carry a heavy load of firewood. "Why do you toil so?" Arun asked, his brow furrowed with concern. Bala sighed, "The gods have forsaken me. My fields offer no reward." Arun smiled and replied, "The gods favor those who first help themselves."
