English translation

True embassy is speaking concisely, removing the unessential, speaking pleasantly, and achieving good results.

Listen

Explanation

Four marks of excellent diplomacy: தொகச்சொல்லி (speaking comprehensively yet concisely), தூவாத நீக்கி (removing impure/unnecessary elements), நகச்சொல்லி (speaking pleasantly), and நன்றி பயப்பது (achieving good outcomes).

Story behind this kural

The King of Eldoria and the Queen of Solara had long been at odds. Whispers of war echoed through the valleys. The King dispatched his Envoy, Elara, to Solara. Elara arrived at the Queen's court, bowed, and spoke. She succinctly stated the King's desire for peace, leaving out the boasts and threats others had suggested. She omitted tales of past grievances, focusing only on the present opportunity. She spoke with a gentle tone, praising the Queen's wisdom and the beauty of Solara. The Queen listened, her face softening. She responded in kind, proposing a trade agreement that would benefit both kingdoms. Soon, the two rulers were exchanging gifts, and the threat of war vanished. Elara returned to Eldoria, not with a tale of conquest, but of understanding. The King, seeing the agreement, smiled. He knew then what true strength truly was.
