Mukanōkki niṟka amaiyum

Akanōkki uṟṟatu uṇarvārp peṟiṉ

English translation

It is enough to just look at the face if one has those who can perceive the inner feelings from it.

Listen

Explanation

If you have advisors who can read inner thoughts (அகநோக்கி உற்றது உணர்வார்) from faces, simply presenting the face (முக நோக்கி நிற்க) is enough. No words needed with such perceptive people.

Story behind this kural

The King paced his throne room, a storm brewing within him. He’d received a troubling report – a neighboring kingdom threatened war. He didn’t need to speak. His advisor, a wizened old man named Thiru, simply observed the King's face. Thiru, with a gentle nod, signaled for the royal scribe. The scribe, understanding the unspoken command, quickly fetched parchment and quill. Without a word, the King began to pace again. Thiru, watching the King's troubled brow, subtly gestured for the scribe to begin drafting a message of peace. The King paused, his gaze softening as he noticed Thiru's actions. He offered a slight smile, a silent acknowledgement of his advisor’s wisdom. The scribe, understanding the King's shift in mood, changed the draft to include an offer of trade and friendship. Within hours, the message was sent. The threat of war dissolved, replaced by the promise of prosperity. The King knew he was fortunate to have Thiru by his side.
