எதிர்நின்றெ தேஎவல் செய்பவன் ஒல்லவோ
துங்க சிறையெறிந்தான் கோல்
Etirniṉdrē tēeval ceypavaṉ ollavō
Tuṅka ciṟaiyeriṅntāṉ kōl
English translation
Can one who stands opposing and does whatever is commanded withstand the scepter of him who has shattered lofty fortresses?

Even the most obedient soldier who bravely faces enemies cannot resist the authority of a king who has proven his might by conquering formidable strongholds.

Story behind this kural
In a kingdom nestled beside a vast, untamed forest, lived a woodcutter named Arun. He was known for his strength and unwavering obedience to the King. One day, the King commanded Arun to fell the tallest tree in the forest, a task many had failed. Arun, without hesitation, sharpened his axe and began his work. Days turned into weeks, and finally, with a mighty crash, the giant tree fell. The King, impressed, granted Arun a small plot of land. Soon after, a neighboring kingdom, known for its impenetrable fortress, declared war. The King commanded all his soldiers, including Arun, to defend their land. Though Arun fought bravely, following every order, the enemy's superior strategy and might overwhelmed the kingdom. The fortress fell, and the King was captured. Arun, despite his courage and obedience, found himself helpless against the victor's power, his axe now useless against the conquering king’s decree. His loyalty alone was not enough.
