உறின்நட்டு அறின்ஒரூஉம் ஒப்பிலார்
கேண்மை பெறினும் இழப்பினும் என்

English translation
What does it matter whether one gains or loses the friendship of those who befriend when convenient and abandon when not?

Explanation
The friendship of those who befriend when profitable (உறின் நட்டு) and abandon otherwise (அறின் ஒரூஉம்) is worthless. Gaining or losing (பெறினும் இழப்பினும்) such friendship means nothing.

Story behind this kural
