பேதை பெருங்கெழீஇ நட்பின்
அறிவுடையார் ஏதின்மை கோடி உறும்

Aṟivuṭaiyār ētiṉmai kōṭi uṟum
English translation
The enmity of the wise is a million times better than the intense friendship of a fool.

Story behind this kural

Kumar, observing the stranger's deceitful nature, warned Elan, advising caution. Elan, blinded by the promise of wealth, dismissed Kumar's concerns. The trade route proved treacherous. The stranger’s plans crumbled, leaving Elan with nothing but debt and regret. Kumar, though saddened, offered no aid, knowing it would only enable Elan’s folly. He simply offered his wisdom, which Elan, in his moment of despair, finally understood. He had lost everything by ignoring a friend who sought to protect him.
