English translation

Abandon silently the friendship of those who obstruct possible tasks.

Listen

Explanation

Those who obstruct (உடற்றுபவர்) tasks that can be done (ஒல்லும் கருமம்) should be abandoned (சோர விடல்) without even speaking (சொல்லாடார் - without argument).

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two friends, Arul and Selvan. Arul, a skilled carpenter, dreamt of building a grand bridge to connect the village to the fertile lands across the water. Selvan, however, constantly found fault, claiming the task was too difficult, the wood too weak, and the river too swift. Every day, Arul would gather his tools and begin his work, only to be met with Selvan’s discouraging words. “The wood will rot,” Selvan would say. “The river will sweep it away!” Arul, though disheartened, persisted. One day, a wise old woman noticed Arul's dwindling progress. She observed Selvan’s constant negativity. She quietly advised Arul, “Some voices only hinder the song of your heart. Listen instead to the rhythm of your own hammer, the strength of your own vision.” Arul, taking her words to heart, continued his work but no longer shared his plans with Selvan. The bridge, built steadily and silently, eventually stood strong, connecting the village to prosperity. Selvan, still murmuring doubts, remained on the village side, his voice unheard amidst the sounds of progress.
