மனத்தின் அமையா தவரை
எனைத்தொன்றும் சொல்லினால் தேறற்பாற்று அன்று
Maṉattiṉ amaiyā tavarai
Eṉaittoṉṟum colliṉāl tēṟaṟpāṟṟu aṉṟu
English translation
Those whose hearts are not in harmony with us should not be trusted, no matter what they say.
Listen
Explanation
Words alone should not inspire trust. Those whose minds (மனம்) are not aligned (அமையாதவர்) with yours should never be believed, regardless of their eloquent speech (எனைத்தொன்றும் சொல்லினால்). True friendship is of hearts, not of words.

Story behind this kural
In a bustling village lived a merchant named Arun, known for his shrewd deals. One day, a charming stranger, posing as a trader, arrived. He showered Arun with flattery, promising vast profits through a new, secret route. Arun, swayed by the stranger's sweet words and the allure of wealth, readily agreed to a partnership. The stranger spoke eloquently, his promises as bright as gold. Yet, Arun noticed a coldness in the stranger's eyes, a disconnect between his words and his demeanor. Ignoring his instincts, Arun invested heavily. Soon, the "secret route" proved to be a lie. The stranger vanished with Arun's wealth, leaving behind only empty promises. Arun, ruined and betrayed, sat alone. He remembered the stranger's words, so carefully crafted, and contrasted them with the hollowness he felt. He realized the true value lay not in the words spoken, but in the heart behind them.
