செப்பின் புணர்ச்சிபோல் கூடினும்

கூடாதே உட்பகை உற்ற குடி

Ceppiṉ puṇarccipōl kūṭiṉum

Kūṭātē uṭpakai uṟṟa kuṭi

English translation

Though they join like the halves of a box, a family afflicted by internal enmity will not truly unite.

Listen

Explanation

A family with internal enemies may appear united like a box with fitting lid (செப்பின் புணர்ச்சி), but true unity is impossible. External appearance masks internal fracture.

Story behind this kural

In a small village nestled beside a whispering river, lived the Weaver family. They were known for their vibrant tapestries, each thread carefully woven to create breathtaking scenes. Old Man Hemal, the father, was renowned for his designs, while his two sons, Rohan and Jai, were skilled at the loom. Though they worked side-by-side, a silent rivalry festered. Rohan envied Jai’s nimble fingers, and Jai resented Rohan’s easy charm with customers. Their mother, Maya, tried to mediate, but the brothers’ resentment was a knot she couldn't untangle. One day, a wealthy merchant commissioned a grand tapestry depicting the king's procession. It was a chance for great fortune. Rohan and Jai, forced to collaborate, worked with the same threads, the same colors, yet their parts never truly aligned. The finished tapestry, though beautiful from afar, upon closer inspection revealed uneven patterns, a testament to the brothers' divided hearts. The merchant, disappointed, offered a meager price. The Weaver family, though appearing together, found their true potential – and their fortune – forever fragmented.
