உடம்பாடு இலாதவர் வாழ்க்கை
குடங்கருள் பாம்போடு உடனுறைந் தற்று
Uṭampāṭu ilātavar vāḻkkai
Kuṭaṅkaruḷ pāmpōṭu uṭaṉuṟain taṟṟu
English translation
Living with those who lack harmony is like dwelling in a hut with a snake.

Cohabiting with those without mutual understanding (உடம்பாடு இலாதவர்) is as dangerous as sharing a small hut with a venomous snake. Death lurks in every moment.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived two brothers, Arun and Bala. They inherited a rice field, the only source of their livelihood. Arun was hardworking and kind, while Bala was envious and lazy, secretly wishing for Arun's share. One season, the rains were scarce. Arun suggested they work together, sharing the water from their well. Bala, however, refused, hoping Arun's crops would fail. He secretly diverted the water, letting his own field flourish while Arun's withered. Soon, Bala’s field was plagued with pests. He sought Arun's help, but Arun, remembering Bala’s earlier actions, hesitated. The pests spread, destroying Bala’s harvest. In the end, both brothers lost everything. They were left with nothing but the bitter taste of regret and the silent echo of their unspoken discord.
