அக்னிக் குஞ்சொன்று கண்டேன் அதை அங்கொரு காட்டிலோர் பொந்திடை வைத்தேன் வெந்து தணிந்தது காடு தழல் வீரத் தீயின் குஞ்சினில் சுடர்கள் நெஞ்சில் அக்னிக் குஞ்சொன்று வைத்தேன் நீசர் அச்சத்தில் நடுங்கி ஓடுவார் அஞ்சாது இருக்க வழி இதுவே அன்னை சக்தியின் குஞ்சே நான் தீயின் குஞ்சே என் நெஞ்சினிலே தினமும் பிரகாசம் வீசுகிறாய் ஆயிரம் சூரியன் போல் ஒளிர்ந்து அகிலமெல்லாம் ஒளி பரப்புவாய் கோழைத் தனமும் பயமும் எல்லாம் குப்பையில் எறிந்தேன் நான் இன்றே வீழ்வது என்றால் எழுந்திடுவேன் வீரம் என் உயிர் மூச்சாகும்

English Translation
I found a spark of fire, I kept it In a hollow of a forest somewhere The forest burned and subsided in flames Sparks from the cub of heroic fire I placed a spark of fire in my heart The wicked will tremble in fear and flee This is the way to remain fearless I am the cub of Mother Shakti O spark of fire in my heart Every day you radiate brilliance Shining like a thousand suns You spread light throughout the universe All cowardice and fear I threw into the garbage heap today If I fall, I will rise again Valor is my very breath of life
Historical Context
One of Bharathiyar's most powerful revolutionary poems, composed around 1912-1914. The "Agni" (fire) is a central symbol in Bharathiyar's poetry, representing both the divine fire of creation and the revolutionary fire of transformation. The poem uses the metaphor of a small spark that can burn down an entire forest to illustrate how a single courageous individual can ignite social change. This poem was banned by the British and became a secret anthem among revolutionaries. The imagery connects to the Vedic fire god Agni and to the concept of "tapas" (spiritual heat/austerity). Bharathiyar saw himself as an "agni kunju" - a spark meant to ignite the fire of freedom in Indian hearts.
