History
Kozhukattai (also called modak in other languages) is Lord Ganesha's favorite food according to Hindu tradition. The name comes from Tamil "kozhu" (fat/plump) and "kattai" (bundle). The sweet coconut filling represents the sweetness of the soul, while the outer rice covering represents the physical body.
Why It’s Loved
Kozhukattai is inseparable from Vinayaka Chaturthi celebrations. Making kozhukattai together is a family bonding activity - grandmothers teaching granddaughters the art of shaping these dumplings. The belief that Lord Ganesha loves kozhukattai makes preparing it a devotional act.
