ஒண்பொருள் கொள்வார் பிறர்

Aṉporīit taṟceṟṟu aṟanōkkātu īṭṭiya

Oṇporuḷ koḷvār piṟar

English translation

The bright wealth accumulated without love, self-care, or virtue will be enjoyed by others.

Listen

Explanation

Those who abandon love (அன்பு), neglect themselves (தற்செற்று), and ignore righteousness (அறம்) to hoard wealth will never enjoy it. Others - heirs, thieves, or the state - will take it all.

Story behind this kural

In a bustling village, lived a merchant named Silas, known for his relentless pursuit of gold. He squeezed every coin, never offering a kind word or a helping hand. His days were filled with calculating profits, his nights with guarding his overflowing coffers. He neglected his health, gorging on rich foods while ignoring the hunger of others. He dismissed the pleas of the poor, seeing only weakness in their faces. One harsh winter, Silas fell gravely ill. His vast wealth could not buy him health. As he lay shivering, his relatives descended upon his mansion. They squabbled over his possessions, indifferent to his suffering. Silas, in his final breaths, watched his life’s work being divided amongst those who held no love for him. The village, meanwhile, whispered of his greed and the emptiness of his legacy. His gold brought no warmth, no comfort, only the fleeting satisfaction of acquisition, now enjoyed by others.
