அறனறிந்து மூத்த அறிவுடையார்
குடிசெய்வார் குற்றமுற்றார் கூற்றம் கொளல்
Aṟaṉaṟintu mūtta aṟivuṭaiyār
Kuṭiceyvār kuṟṟamuṟṟār kūṟṟam koḷal
English translation
Those who know virtue and possess mature wisdom will uphold their family; those who fail embrace death.

அறம் இன்னதென உணர்ந்து, முதிர்ந்த அறிவோடு செயல்படுபவரே குடும்பத்தைக் காப்பார்கள். அப்படிச் செய்யத் தவறியவர்கள், குடும்பத்திற்கு அழிவு தேடித் தருவதால், அது மரணத்திற்குச் சமம். குடும்பத்தை உயர்த்துவது குடிசெயல் வகையின் முக்கிய கடமை.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a whispering river lived two brothers, Arun and Bala. Arun, the elder, was known for his wisdom and kindness. He toiled diligently, sharing his harvest and always considering the needs of his family and neighbors. Bala, however, was fond of gambling and idle pleasures. He squandered his inheritance and neglected his duties, caring only for himself. Years passed. Arun’s farm flourished, providing for his children and contributing to the village's well-being. He was respected and his family thrived. Bala, on the other hand, was left with nothing. His home fell into disrepair, his children went hungry, and he was shunned by the villagers. One harsh winter, a severe famine struck. Arun's storehouses, built through years of careful planning and generosity, were a lifeline to his family and many others in the village. Bala, however, found himself alone, with no resources and no support. His family was scattered, their lives shattered by his choices. He withered, consumed by regret. The river flowed on, indifferent to his fate.
