If the ploughed earth is dried to powder, even without manure the land will yield well enough.

Listen

Explanation

Proper tillage is more important than fertilizer. When soil is thoroughly pulverized and aerated, it naturally becomes productive.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a fertile valley, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun, known for his generosity, lavished his fields with the finest manure, believing it the key to a bountiful harvest. Bala, however, was a man of simpler means. He spent his days meticulously tilling his land, breaking the soil until it resembled fine dust. When the harvest season arrived, Arun’s crops, though initially promising, yielded meager results. The soil, compacted by heavy rains and the rich manure, struggled to breathe. Bala’s fields, however, overflowed with golden grains. His harvest was so abundant that his neighbors marveled at his success. Arun, bewildered, approached Bala. “My friend,” he said, “I gave my fields the best of everything, yet my yield is poor. What is your secret?” Bala smiled, pointing to his loose, airy soil. “I simply prepared the ground well, allowing it to breathe and receive the sun's warmth."
