Cellāṉ kiḻavaṉ iruppiṉ

Nilampulant tuṉṉātu ūṭip paṭum

English translation

If the farmer does not go to his field but stays idle, the land will sulk and refuse to yield.

Listen

Explanation

Land responds to personal attention. An absent farmer's field becomes unproductive, as if the earth itself resents neglect.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a fertile valley, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun was diligent. Each morning, he walked his fields, hands in the soil, tending to his crops. His land flourished, yielding a bountiful harvest year after year. Bala, however, was fond of leisure. He’d visit his fields only when the sun was high, preferring to spend his mornings chatting with friends. His land, once promising, began to wither. Weeds choked the young plants, and the soil grew hard and barren. One day, Arun saw Bala looking sadly at his failing crops. “What troubles you, friend?” he asked. Bala sighed, “The land has turned against me. It refuses to give.” Arun smiled. He knew the secret, for he understood the silent language of the earth. He simply said, “Perhaps the land misses your presence.” And he returned to his own field, where the grains swayed gently in the breeze.
