படுபயன் வெஃகிப் பழிப்படுவ செய்யார்
நடுவன்மை நாணு பவர்
Paṭupayaṉ veḵkip paḻippaṭuva ceyyār
Naṭuvaṉmai nāṇu pavar
English translation
Those who are ashamed of injustice will not covet benefits and do blameworthy deeds.

Explanation
Shame at injustice prevents covetousness. Those with a proper sense of moral shame (நாணு) will not seek undeserved gains. Shame is a protective virtue.

அநீதிக்கு நாணுபவர், பிறர் பொருளை விரும்ப மாட்டார். வெஃகாமை அதிகாரத்தின்படி, பழி தரும் செயல்களைச் செய்யாமல் நேர்மையாக இருப்பார்கள். நாணம் ஒரு காக்கும் குணம். இதுவே நீதியை நிலைநாட்டும்.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun toiled diligently, his fields yielding modest harvests. Bala, however, envied Arun's success. He noticed Arun's fertile land and plotted to acquire it. One day, Bala spread rumors, falsely accusing Arun of stealing from the village well. The village elder, swayed by Bala's persuasive words, threatened to seize Arun's land. Arun, crestfallen, prepared to leave his home. As he was leaving, the village watchman arrived. He had overheard Bala's boasts to a friend about his deception. The watchman, a man of integrity, exposed Bala's lies. The villagers, ashamed of their hasty judgment, turned against Bala. Arun's land was restored, and Bala was left with nothing but disgrace. Arun continued to farm his land, his harvests still modest, but his heart now filled with peace.
