உய்த்துச் சொரியினும் போகா தம
Pariyiṉum ākāvām pālalla
Uyttuc coriyiṉum pōkā tama
English translation
What is not destined will not come despite effort; what is destined will not leave even if pushed away.
Listen
Explanation
A powerful statement on destiny: that which is not பால் (destined for you) won't come no matter how hard you try. Conversely, what is yours (தம) won't leave even if you try to discard it.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived two farmers, Arul and Selvan. Arul toiled endlessly, striving to cultivate a rare, crimson-petaled flower, believing it would bring him fortune. He watered it with care, shielded it from the sun, and even whispered prayers to the wind, yet the flower refused to bloom. Meanwhile, Selvan, content with his common sunflowers, found his field overflowing with the crimson flowers. They sprouted from seeds blown by the wind, despite his attempts to weed them out. He gave the flowers away, shared them with the village, but still, they bloomed. Arul, seeing Selvan’s good fortune, grew frustrated. He doubled his efforts, but the crimson blooms remained elusive. Selvan, witnessing Arul's disappointment, simply smiled. He knew the ways of the earth. Some things, he understood, are simply meant to be. And others, no matter how hard you try, will always remain just out of reach.
