மடியுடையார் மாண்பயன் எய்தல் அரிது

Paṭiyuṭaiyār paṟṟamaintak kaṇṇum

Maṭiyuṭaiyār māṇpayaṉ eytal aritu

English translation

Even if those with great estates become supportive, lazy people will find it difficult to achieve noble results.

Listen

Explanation

External help cannot save the lazy person. Even if wealthy patrons (படியுடையார்) extend their support (பற்றமைந்த), the lazy individual (மடியுடையார்) will still fail to achieve excellence (மாண்பயன்). This teaches that success ultimately depends on one's own effort, not on others' help.

Story behind this kural

In a village nestled beside a fertile valley lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun inherited a vast, prosperous farm from his father. Bala, however, possessed only a small plot, but his ambition burned brightly. Arun, accustomed to comfort, employed many hands but rarely involved himself in the work. He spent his days feasting and enjoying the fruits of his inheritance. His fields, though vast, slowly became overgrown with weeds. The workers, lacking direction, toiled without purpose. Bala, despite his smaller land, worked tirelessly. He rose with the sun, tending his crops with care and precision. He sought advice from experienced elders, learning new techniques to improve his yield. His small plot flourished, yielding a bountiful harvest year after year. One season, a severe drought struck the valley. Arun's neglected fields produced meager crops. He pleaded for help from wealthy merchants, but his farm remained unproductive. Bala, however, had prepared his land, and his healthy crops survived. He even offered help to his neighbor, for the harvest was plentiful.
