இடிபுரிந்து எள்ளுஞ்சொல் கேட்பர்
மடிபுரிந்து மாண்ட உஞற்றி லவர்
Iṭipurintu eḷḷuñcol kēṭpar
Maṭipurintu māṇṭa uñaṟṟi lavar
English translation
Those who embrace laziness and lack noble effort will hear words of rebuke and contempt.

Explanation
The consequence of laziness is social humiliation. The lazy person will hear இடி (harsh rebuke, like thunder) and எள்ளுஞ்சொல் (contemptuous words). Society does not respect those who refuse to work. This kural shows that laziness leads not just to poverty but to loss of dignity and respect.

சோம்பேறித்தனம் உள்ளவர்கள், முயற்சி செய்யாமல் இருப்பவர்கள், பிறர் இகழ்ச்சியாகப் பேசும் சொற்களைக் கேட்பார்கள். "மடியின்மை" அதிகாரத்தில், சோம்பல் இல்லாமல் உழைத்தால் மட்டுமே மதிப்பு கிடைக்கும் என்பதை வள்ளுவர் கூறுகிறார். உழைப்பின்றி இருப்பது அவமானத்தைத் தரும்.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a lush green valley, lived two farmers, Arun and Bala. Arun toiled diligently, rising with the sun to tend his fields. His crops flourished, and his barn overflowed with grains. Bala, however, loved to linger in bed. He grumbled about the heat and the hard work, preferring to sit under the shade of a banyan tree. When the rains came, Arun’s fields were ready. His harvest was plentiful, and he sold his produce at the market, earning a good price. Bala’s field was neglected. His few, sparse plants withered, and he had nothing to sell. The villagers, witnessing Bala’s misfortune, began to whisper. They shook their heads, murmuring about his idleness. Some offered him advice, but he brushed them aside. Soon, Bala was known for his empty granary and his empty promises. He began to avoid the market, ashamed of the judgment in the villagers' eyes. Arun, meanwhile, continued to prosper, his name spoken with respect and admiration.
