கடைக்கொட்கச் செய்தக்க தாண்மை
இடைக்கொட்கின் எற்றா விழுமம் தரும்
Kaṭaikkoṭkac ceytakka tāṇmai
Iṭaikkoṭkiṉ eṟṟā viḻumam tarum
English translation
Manly effort should persist until the end; abandoning midway brings endless sorrow.

Story behind this kural
The villagers of Oorani decided to build a well. For weeks, they toiled, their arms aching, the sun beating down. As they neared the water table, doubt crept in. “It’s too hard,” grumbled some. “Let’s just fetch water from the river, it's easier.” Many stopped digging, discouraged by the endless task. Only old Maniyan, his face etched with wrinkles, continued. Day after day, he chipped away, fueled by a quiet determination. The villagers mocked him, calling him stubborn. Finally, with a mighty heave, Maniyan struck water! A clear, cool stream gushed forth. The remaining villagers rushed back, ashamed. They helped Maniyan build a sturdy wall around the well. Soon, the entire village rejoiced, enjoying fresh water even during the hottest summers. The river, once their only source, was now a backup. Maniyan smiled, watching the children play near the well he built. He knew the true meaning of enduring effort.
