Naṭṭārkku nalla ceyaliṉ viraintatē

English translation
Even more urgent than doing good for friends is winning over those who are not yet friends.

Story behind this kural
The potter, Elan, was known for his generous spirit. He always gave the best pots to his friends, the villagers. When a drought struck, Elan offered water to all, regardless of their standing. However, the wealthy merchant, not yet a friend, grumbled about the price of Elan’s pots. One day, the King needed a vast quantity of pots for a royal festival. Elan, assuming his friends would secure the order, was shocked when the merchant was chosen instead. The merchant, who had been quietly observing Elan's skills and generosity, had offered the King a deal: the best pots at a fair price, and assistance with transport. Elan's friends were loyal, but they lacked the resources to help. Seeing Elan’s disappointment, the merchant offered him work, sharing the royal order. Elan learned that expanding one’s reach could sometimes yield the most unexpected rewards.
