போற்றின் அரியவை போற்றல்
கடுத்தபின் தேற்றுதல் யார்க்கும் அரிது
Pōṟṟiṉ ariyavai pōṟṟal
Kaṭuttapiṉ tēṟṟutal yārkkum aritu
English translation
If you wish to protect yourself, guard against offenses; once the king is angered, regaining trust is difficult for anyone.
Listen
Explanation
Prevention is key: guard against offenses (அரியவை போற்றல்) that anger the king. Once royal anger (கடுத்தபின்) is aroused, convincing the king otherwise (தேற்றுதல்) is extremely difficult.

Story behind this kural
In a bustling village, lived two potters, Arun and Bala. Arun, known for his flawless craftsmanship, was often summoned by the King to create ornate vessels. Bala, though skilled, sometimes grumbled about the King's demands, muttering complaints about the royal family's lavish lifestyle. One day, Arun carefully crafted a magnificent vase for the King. Bala, however, was heard scoffing at the King's taste in front of a royal messenger. The messenger reported this to the King. Later, when the King sought another potter, he chose Arun, praising his skill and loyalty. He ignored Bala’s pleas for work. Bala’s beautiful pots remained unsold, and he was left to reflect on the consequences of his careless words. He learned that once trust is broken, it is a difficult thing to mend.
