வெறுப்பில செய்யவல்லார் அரசின் அருகு

Veṟuppila ceyyavallār araciṉ aruku
English translation
Those who understand the king's intentions, consider timing, and act without causing displeasure will be close to the throne.

Story behind this kural
In a kingdom nestled beside a vast forest, lived two woodcutters, Arun and Bala. Both sought favor from the King, who needed timber for a new palace. Arun, eager, rushed to present the finest wood at the King's first mention. He was rebuffed; the King had not yet decided. Bala, however, observed the King's moods. He saw the King’s worry over a drought and waited. When the King spoke of building a well, Bala offered the strong, water-resistant wood at the perfect moment. Arun, seeing Bala's success, grew envious. He then saw the King in a joyous mood after a victory. Arun, ignoring the Queen's recent plea for quiet, loudly offered his services. The King, annoyed, dismissed him. Bala, meanwhile, noticed the King's fatigue after the victory feast. He quietly brought the King a small, exquisitely carved wooden box to hold his tired eyes closed during the afternoon. The King smiled, appreciating the gesture.
