தொல்லார் பழிமன்னும் தூக்கார் கடன்மன்னும்
இல்லா இளிமன்னும் மற்று
Tollār paḻimaṉṉum tūkkār kaṭaṉmaṉṉum
Illā iḷimaṉṉum maṟṟu
English translation
Ancestral blame, burdensome debt, and personal disgrace—all three abide with the poor.

Story behind this kural
In a humble village nestled beside a whispering river, lived a farmer named Arul. His fields yielded little, and his family often went hungry. He inherited his father's debts, a heavy burden that weighed upon his spirit. One year, a wealthy merchant offered Arul a loan, promising prosperity if he cultivated a new crop. Arul’s children, once proud, now hid their faces in shame. They were mocked by others in the village. Even the land seemed to reject them. The weight of their ancestor’s burden, their own crushing debt, and the village’s scorn, seemed to follow them everywhere. Their future was clouded by the shadow of poverty.
