அறத்திற்கே அன்புசார் பென்ப
அறியார் மறத்திற்கும் அஃதே துணை
Aṟattiṟkē aṉpucār peṉpa
Aṟiyār maṟattiṟkum aḵtē tuṇai
English translation
The ignorant say love is only for virtue; but it is also the support for valor.

Explanation
Some mistakenly think love only relates to gentle virtuous acts. Thiruvalluvar corrects this: love also gives strength for courageous deeds. A warrior fights bravely out of love for family, country, and justice. Love is not weakness; it empowers both gentleness and valor.

அன்பு அறத்திற்கு மட்டும் என்று சிலர் நினைப்பர். அது தவறு. வீரத்திற்கும் அன்புதான் அடிப்படை. குடும்பம், நாடு மேல் உள்ள அன்பே வீரத்தை தரும். அன்பு மென்மைக்கும், வலிமைக்கும் உதவும்.

Story behind this kural
The village of Eldoria was often raided by bandits. The villagers, though kind and generous, were fearful and weak. They hoarded their meager possessions, afraid to share, lest they be seen as vulnerable. One day, the bandits struck. Among the villagers was a young woman named Anya, known for her gentle heart. She had always tended the sick and comforted the grieving. But when the bandits threatened her neighbors, Anya did not cower. Remembering her family and their shared love, she rallied the others. She organized the children to hide the elderly. Anya, with nothing but courage and her love for her village, confronted the bandits, shielding her people. Seeing her bravery, the other villagers found their own courage. They fought back, driving the bandits away. From then on, Eldoria was a safer place, built not just on kindness, but on the strength born of love.
