விழைதகையான் வேண்டி இருப்பர்
கெழுதகையாற் கேளாது நட்டார் செயின்
Viḻaitakaiyāṉ vēṇṭi iruppar
Keḻutakaiyāṟ kēḷātu naṭṭār ceyiṉ
English translation
When old friends act with intimate liberty without asking, one desires them even more.

When established friends (நட்டார்) act with familiar liberty (கெழுதகையால்) without asking permission (கேளாது), it makes them more desirable (விழைதகையான் வேண்டி இருப்பர்). True intimacy needs no formality.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two friends, Elan and Kumar. Elan was a farmer, and Kumar, a weaver. One scorching summer, Elan’s well ran dry. His crops withered under the sun. That evening, Kumar, without a word, arrived at Elan’s field. He had brought water, drawn from his own well, and began to irrigate Elan’s parched land. Elan, initially surprised, watched Kumar work tirelessly. He wanted to offer payment, but Kumar waved him away, a gentle smile on his face. He simply said, "We share the sun, we share the rain, we share our burdens." Later, during the harvest, Elan brought Kumar the finest grain, not as payment, but as a gift. Kumar, in turn, gifted Elan a newly woven shawl, the softest he had ever made. Each act, offered freely, deepened their bond. Their friendship, rooted in mutual respect and unspoken understanding, blossomed stronger with each passing season.
