English translation
When old friends do hurtful things, understand it as either folly or great intimacy.
Listen
Explanation
If old friends (நட்டார்) do hurtful things (நோதக்க), interpret it as either பேதைமை (folly) or பெருங்கிழமை (great intimacy/liberty). Give them the benefit of doubt.

Story behind this kural
In a small village nestled beside a whispering river, lived two lifelong friends, Elara and Rohan. They had shared joys and sorrows, laughter and tears. One day, Rohan, in a fit of anger, carelessly damaged Elara’s prized weaving loom, a tool she depended upon for her livelihood. Elara’s heart ached at the sight of her broken loom. Rohan, seeing the distress in her eyes, immediately regretted his action. He stammered apologies, offering to help her repair it, even to replace it if necessary. Elara, though saddened, did not fly into a rage. Instead, she took a deep breath, recognizing the heat of the moment. She knew Rohan, her friend of many years, was not a malicious person. She understood that his action stemmed from a moment of uncontrolled emotion. Together, they mended the loom. Though the repair took time, their friendship remained unbroken, stronger even, for the shared experience.
