Listen

Explanation

When an ignorant person (அறிவிலான்) reveals secrets (அருமறை சோரும்) that should be kept, he brings great trouble (பெருமிறை) upon himself (தானே தனக்கு). He becomes his own worst enemy through indiscretion.

Story behind this kural

In a quiet village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived a miller named Thiru. He was known for his boisterous laughter and loose tongue. One day, the King confided a secret: a hidden route through the treacherous mountains, vital for trade. He entrusted Thiru, believing in his simple nature. Thiru, however, could not contain his excitement. He shared the secret with the baker, the weaver, and anyone who would listen, embellishing the tale with each telling. Soon, the news reached the ears of the neighboring kingdom, always eager for advantage. They ambushed the King's caravans, seizing valuable goods and disrupting the trade. The village suffered, its prosperity dwindling. The King, enraged, discovered Thiru’s betrayal. He banished the miller, who, now alone and ashamed, understood the weight of his indiscretion. His careless words had brought ruin upon himself and his community.
