உலகத்தார் உண்டென்பது இல்லென்பான்
வையத்து அலகையா வைக்கப் படும்
Ulakattār uṇṭeṉpatu illeṉpāṉ
Vaiyattu alakaiyā vaikkap paṭum
English translation
One who denies what the world affirms will be considered a demon among men.

Explanation
When someone denies (இல் என்பான்) what the world accepts as true (உலகத்தார் உண்டு என்பது), he will be regarded as a demon (அலகை) on earth. Contrarian foolishness that opposes established wisdom brands one as inhuman.

Story behind this kural
In a bustling village, lived a baker named Silas. Every morning, he baked loaves of bread, which everyone agreed were the finest in the land. One day, Silas declared, "The sun does not rise in the east, but the west!" The villagers, bewildered, pointed to the golden sunrise. Silas scoffed. "You are all blind! The sun is clearly setting!" He refused to sell his bread, convinced he was right. Days turned into weeks. The villagers, needing bread, went elsewhere. Silas's shop, once filled with the aroma of baking, became silent. His family grew thin. A wise old woman visited Silas. "Why is your oven cold?" she asked. Silas repeated his claim. The woman smiled sadly. "The world sees the sunrise. To deny what everyone else experiences is to walk a lonely path." She then walked away, leaving Silas to his empty shop and his empty words.
