அஞ்சும் அறியான் அமைவிலன் ஈகலான்
தஞ்சம் எளியன் பகைக்கு
Añcum aṟiyāṉ amaivilan īkalāṉ
Tañcam eḷiyaṉ pakaikku
English translation
One who is fearful, ignorant, discontent, and ungenerous is an easy target for enmity.

Explanation
Four weaknesses make an enemy easy to defeat: அஞ்சும் (fearfulness), அறியான் (ignorance), அமைவிலன் (discontentment), and ஈகலான் (lack of generosity). Such a person (தஞ்சம் எளியன்) is easily conquered.

Story behind this kural
In a village nestled beside a whispering forest lived a miller named Thulasi. Though his mill ground the finest flour, Thulasi was a nervous man, always fretting over imagined threats. He knew nothing of the world beyond his village and was never content with his earnings, hoarding every coin. He gave nothing to anyone. One harsh winter, a neighboring lord, greedy and ambitious, saw an opportunity. He spread rumors of a beast in the forest, terrifying the villagers. Thulasi, already fearful, believed every word. The lord then offered "protection" for a hefty price, a price Thulasi, in his discontent, grudgingly paid. Soon, the lord's men demanded more, and Thulasi, ignorant of their true motives, complied. The lord, seeing Thulasi's weakness, took everything. The villagers, seeing Thulasi's misfortune, understood what had transpired.
