English translation

For warriors, joy is ever-present if they get enemies who are ignorant and fearful.

Listen

Explanation

For those who oppose (செறுவார்க்கு), happiness never departs (சேண் இகவா இன்பம்) if their enemies are ignorant (அறிவிலா) and fearful (அஞ்சும்). Such weak opponents guarantee continuous success and satisfaction.

Story behind this kural

In a valley nestled between towering peaks, lived two villages. One, led by the shrewd Elder Theron, was prosperous and strong. The other, ruled by the timid Mayor Silas, was known for its fear of shadows. One year, a drought threatened both villages. Theron, seeing an opportunity, proposed a trade: his village would share its well-water in exchange for the other village's surplus grain, at a fair price. Silas, however, trembled at the thought of negotiating with Theron. He feared the strong village’s might and readily agreed to exorbitant terms, giving away almost all their grain. Theron’s people thrived. Their well-water and the grain kept them full. Silas’s village, however, struggled, their stores dwindling. Yet, Silas, relieved that he avoided conflict, felt a strange sense of comfort. He had averted a fight, but at what cost? Theron's people prospered, while Silas's people struggled, a stark contrast between strength and weakness.
