English translation

If internal enmity arises among those bound by duty, it brings troubles that lead to destruction.

Listen

Explanation

When those connected by obligation (உறல்முறை) become internal enemies, the resulting problems lead to complete ruin (இறல்முறை). Betrayal by those closest causes the deepest harm.

Story behind this kural

In a prosperous village, two brothers, Arun and Bala, inherited a flourishing rice farm. Arun, the elder, managed the fields while Bala handled the market sales. They appeared inseparable, their success a testament to their shared efforts. However, envy festered in Bala’s heart. He craved sole ownership, believing he deserved more credit. He began subtly sabotaging Arun's work, delaying deliveries and spreading rumors of Arun’s incompetence. The fields, once vibrant, yielded less. Customers grew wary. The villagers, noticing the discord, distanced themselves. Soon, debts mounted, and the farm faced ruin. One harsh winter, the granary, neglected by Bala's scheming, collapsed under heavy snow. The family lost their harvest. Facing starvation, the brothers were forced to sell their land, their once-strong bond now shattered by bitterness and distrust. The village, once proud of their success, watched their downfall with silent pity.
