எரியால் சுடப்படினும் உய்வுண்டாம்
உய்யார் பெரியார்ப் பிழைத்தொழுகு வார்
Eriyāl cuṭappaṭiṉum uyvuṇṭām
Uyyār periyārp piḻaittoḻuku vār
English translation
Even if burned by fire, one may survive; but those who offend the great will not survive.

Explanation
Fire burns can heal; one can survive physical injury. But there is no survival for those who wrong the great. Their retribution is more certain and fatal than fire.

Story behind this kural
In a humble village nestled beside a whispering forest, lived a woodcutter named Arun. He was known for his sharp tongue and quicker temper. One day, while gathering wood, he carelessly insulted the village elder, a wise woman named Maya, accusing her of favoritism. Soon after, Arun’s hut caught fire. Villagers rushed to help, battling the flames. Though his home was destroyed, Arun himself escaped with only minor burns. Later, the village suffered a terrible drought. The farmers pleaded with the rain god, but the skies remained stubbornly clear. The crops withered, and famine loomed. Arun, desperate, went to Maya, seeking her blessing for rain. She simply turned away, and the drought persisted, devastating the village. Arun's spirit broke, realizing the consequences of his actions. He was left with nothing.
