English translation

Of what use are a well-ordered life and great wealth if the excellent great ones become angry?

Listen

Explanation

All prosperity - organized lifestyle (வகைமாண்ட வாழ்க்கை) and abundant wealth (வான்பொருள்) - becomes worthless when one incurs the wrath of the truly great (தகைமாண்ட தக்கார்).

Story behind this kural

In a bustling village nestled beside a shimmering river, lived a wealthy merchant named Silas. His storehouses overflowed with goods, and his life was one of comfort. Yet, Silas was known for his arrogance. He often dismissed the wise elder, Elias, who lived humbly on the village outskirts, as a foolish old man. One day, Silas planned a grand feast, inviting all the village except Elias. As the feast began, a terrible storm erupted. The river, usually gentle, swelled into a raging torrent, threatening to flood the village. The villagers panicked, scrambling to save their homes and possessions. Silas, fearing for his wealth, rushed to the riverbank, but the floodwaters swept away his storehouses, his riches, everything. Only Elias, who had foreseen the storm and prepared, remained safe, his small dwelling untouched. As the storm passed, and the villagers surveyed the damage, they saw that Silas was left with nothing. The villagers realized who was truly wealthy.
