மாய மகளிர் முயக்கு
Āyum aṟiviṉar allārkku aṇaṅkeṉpa
Māya makaḷir muyakku
English translation
They say that for those who lack discerning wisdom, the embrace of illusory women is like being seized by a demon.
Listen
Explanation
For the undiscerning (ஆயும் அறிவினர் அல்லார்), courtesans' embrace is demonic possession (அணங்கு). Their deceptive charm (மாயம்) entraps the foolish like supernatural torment.

Story behind this kural
In a bustling marketplace, a young merchant named Kavi arrived, eager to spend his newfound wealth. He met a woman of captivating beauty, Maya, who showered him with flattering words and promises of eternal love. Kavi, blinded by her charm, spent lavishly, buying her jewels and fine silks. He neglected his business and ignored the wise counsel of his friends. Maya, in turn, introduced Kavi to a life of fleeting pleasures. Every day, Kavi found himself further in debt, his fortune dwindling. When his coffers were finally empty, Maya vanished, leaving him alone and heartbroken. Despondent, Kavi wandered the marketplace, where he encountered a wizened old sage. The sage, without a word, simply pointed to the setting sun and then to the empty space where Maya once stood. Kavi understood; the brilliant colors of the sunset, like Maya's beauty, were fleeting and could not be grasped. Only the enduring light of the stars remained.
