Explanation

Gambling is personified as a முகடி (demon/hag) that envelops (மூடப்பட்டார்) its victims. They become அகடாரார் (never satisfied) and suffer perpetual அல்லல் (misery).

Story behind this kural

In a bustling village, lived a farmer named Arul. He was known for his bountiful harvests, but one day, a traveling merchant arrived, bringing with him a game of chance. Arul, tempted by the promise of easy riches, wagered a portion of his crops. He won, and the thrill of it consumed him. He returned the next day, betting more. He won again, and his small hut seemed too confining for his soaring ambitions. Soon, Arul was wagering his entire harvest, his tools, and finally, his land. Each win fueled his greed, each loss, a fleeting sadness quickly forgotten in the hope of the next turn. His neighbors watched, shaking their heads as his fields lay barren, his home empty. Arul, once a respected member of the community, became a shadow, haunted by the game. He chased the fleeting highs, forever wanting more, and found only emptiness. The village knew the merchant's game as the 'Devi of Tricks'.
